About
The ASDA Company
ASDA, Britain’s best value retailer
ASDA
became part of the Wal-Mart family in June 1999. ASDA was formed
by a group of farmers from Yorkshire and now has 259 stores and
19 depots across the UK. They offer Britain’s best value weekly
shop with prices that are independently shown to be lower than their
main competitors with an excellent mix of fresh food, grocery, clothing,
home, leisure and entertainment goods.
ASDA
employ 122,000 colleagues and they have a well-deserved reputation
for being the best and the friendliest in the industry. Their stores
are all Stores of the Community as they play a positive part in
all aspects of life in their local community from establishing a
new local supplier to working with the emergency services in the
area.
For the third year running ASDA have been voted a top 10 UK employer
(Sunday Times Top 100 Best Employers Survey) and they were awarded
the Nestlé Social Commitment Award in 2002 by their peers
in the food industry.
ASDA's
Price Commitment
ASDA lead the way in giving UK customers the products they want
at the lowest prices and continue to widen the price gap between
their competitors. Underlining the difference, they have again,
for the fifth successive year, been voted ‘Britain’s
best value supermarket’ by leading trade magazine, The Grocer.
They have always been committed to keeping prices low, something
their customers value and recognise. Since joining the Wal-Mart
family in 1999 their sales growth has risen dramatically –
and they have cut their prices by around £0.5 billion in total.
ASDA
Non-Food Growth
ASDA's growth is being partly driven by the opportunities that come
from being part of Wal-Mart - the world's largest retailer with
an unrivalled reputation for delivering the lowest prices.
In
2002, ASDA added 5,000 new general merchandise lines to their range
taking the total number of non-food lines up to 12,000, 8,000 of
which are sourced jointly with Wal-Mart. These new lines have delivered
prices unheard of in the UK market - toasters, kettles and irons
for under £8; pillows for less than £2.50; microwaves
under £35. Sales growth in non-food items has risen by over
25 per cent since they have expanded the general merchandise range.
In
parallel, ASDA is rapidly expanding into new 'Speciality' areas
such as pharmacies, opticians, jewellery and photo departments -
using Wal-Mart's expertise to give these specialist areas a head
start in the UK market.
ASDA now have 59 opticians, 59 photo centres, 81 pharmacies and
107 jewellery departments and will continue rolling out these new
services at pace.
George
at ASDA is their own fashion brand, set up over 13 years ago, and
now stands at around a £1 billion a year business. George
is now the number two volume clothing retailer in the UK as measured
by Fashiontrak.
ASDA's
Environment Policy
ASDA recognise that the activities and services they operate can
potentially have a negative effect on our natural environment. Their
aim is to identify, monitor and reduce any direct negative effects
they have on their environment through a process of continuous monitoring
and improvement in the way they manage their day to day business
operations. They also try to influence their colleagues, customers
and suppliers as this can also help reduce the effect they have
on the environment
ASDA
Colleagues
ASDA currently employ around 128,000 colleagues (including temporary
colleagues). They are Britain’s biggest employer of over 50s
workers with more than 20,000 working in their stores, depots and
offices.
