City

About
The City of London Investment Group Company
City
of London Investment Group is an emerging markets fund management
group based in the UK, the USA and Singapore.
History
City
of London was formed in the early 1990s as a subsidiary of a stockbroking
business, Olliff & Partners (O&P) which was founded in 1987
by City of London's Chief Executive, Barry Olliff. O&P was an
agency stockbroker and corporate finance house specialising initially
in the UK investment trust sector. During the late 1980s, O&P
started broking the developing closed-end country fund arena. The
focus was on London listed emerging market funds and a detailed
database was developed covering this under-researched area.
By
1991, the country fund and emerging markets activities had become
O&Ps major focus, supported by a growing investor interest
in emerging markets around the world. As a direct result, O&P
became one of the leading brokers focusing on emerging markets closed-end
funds.
Against
this background and market position, O&P developed a fund management
business focusing on emerging market country funds called City of
London Unit Trust Managers Limited. The first City of London product,
a UK authorised unit trust was launched in September 1991
The Emerging Markets Country Trust.
Since 1991, the fund management activities of City of London have
developed rapidly and assets under management reached almost US$1bn
by August 1997. As a consequence of the growth of the fund management
business, O&Ps broking activities ceased in May 1997.
Funds
under Management
From
a modest beginning with just £200,000 (US$300,000 approx.)
under management in September 1991, funds under management grew
very rapidly for City of London Investment Group. By early 1997,
as total funds under management had grown to around 1% of our investment
universe, City of London had become one of the largest institutional
investors in emerging market closed-end funds in the world.
Investment
Awards
Since its inception in September 1991, their UK authorised unit
trust, The Emerging Markets Country Trust and its manager have won
