EIRIS Review

EIRIS Company Information

About The EIRIS Company

EIRIS is a leading European provider of independent research into the social, environmental and ethical performance of companies. EIRIS, a UK based organisation, and its eight international research partners together have a wealth of experience in the field of ethical investment research. EIRIS is the market leader in the UK with over 75% of UK ethical funds managed by their clients.

EIRIS is a not-for-profit organisation. They do not investigate companies' financial status but look at their ethical approach and conduct. Increasing interest in ethical investment since 1983 has seen them expand their range of clients and their own size develop significantly from a two person organisation.

History of EIRIS
EIRIS is a charity set up in 1983 with the help of a group of churches and charities which all had investments, and strong convictions of what they thought was right and wrong. They needed a research organisation to help them put their principles into practice when making investment decisions. EIRIS Services Ltd, a subsidiary company of EIRIS, undertakes most of the research for clients and provides commercial services.

What EIRIS does:

  • carries out independent research covering over 40 different areas including animal testing, military, environmental performance and human rights
  • EIRIS researches almost 2700 companies from the UK, continental Europe, North America (the US and Canada) and the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong). These include all companies on the FTSE All World Developed Index
  • provides clients with the information they need to put their own principles into practice when making investment decisions
  • provides a tailor-made service to match clients' social and environmental concerns
  • helps a wide range of charities to select investments according to their chosen ethical criteria
  • engages in constructive dialogue with the companies we research to ensure we have the most up to date and accurate information available
  • provides a range of services for individuals, charities, independent financial advisers, institutional investors and companies (see EIRIS Services for more details)
  • works collaboratively with other bodies to promote and publicise the concept of ethical or socially responsible investment

EIRIS does not:

  • provide financial advice, ethical or otherwise
  • provide a definitive 'acceptable list' of companies in which to invest
  • promote one particular view on ethical issues
  • take a view on the issues it researches
  • recommend any individual financial adviser
  • recommend any particular ethical investment fund
