The Microsoft Company
Microsoft
has always been driven by a sense of mission and a sense of vision.
Through their work in the UK over 18 years, they have seen the business
and social climate in which they operate change. No period of change
has been more rapid than in the last few years, where they have
seen the UK become extremely receptive and enthusiastic about the
benefits offered by technology.
Microsoft's mission:
To enable people and businesses throughout the world to realize
their full potential. Through this mission, Microsoft believe they
can help the UK become a leader in the world's digital economy.
This encompasses the way they work - unless their software makes
British businesses more competitive, they aren't keeping their promises.
Unless they can help produce a better-educated workforce, businesses
won't be able to realise those productivity improvements. And unless
we improve the quality of life at home, we are not making the UK
a better place to live. Although business is to some extent global,
and their organisation is certainly international, their first responsibility
is to help their customers in the UK.
Microsoft
would like to help make the people of the UK, the best educated,
trained and skilled in the world. The UK has made tremendous strides
in the last two years in this area, and while they do not lead the
world, they do have the chance to become a world leader in this
area if they focus on it in the coming years.
Microsoft
must work with everyone else who has an interest to build universal
access to technology for every person, organisation and business
in the UK. And it's not just about access, it's about making technology
relevant to all, so people have the desire to make it a part of
their lifestyles.
The
power of technology to enable people is at the core of the Microsoft
philosophy, and this plays a large part in how we view the world
around us. It runs through every aspect of our business and is the
guiding principle behind the company's community relations activities.
Microsoft
also are fortunate to have a workforce in the UK which is enthusiastic
about making a contribution back to the local community and wider
society. They take note of the causes that matter to their employees
and play an active role in the local community through volunteering
and matching programmes which encourage their people to contribute
to the organisations they care about.
Through
investment in a range of different communities, Microsoft aim to
enhance people's lives by bringing the benefits of information technology
to those who do not have access to it.
Children's
charities, the disabled and the socially disadvantaged, such as
people in areas of high unemployment, are the main communities where
Microsoft invests. And through a variety of different projects they
work hard to make a real impact on people's lives - whether it is
at home, at work or in education - through the utilisation of technology.
From
where they sit at Microsoft, their role is clear: they want to champion
technology and software in particular, as the greatest enabler ever.
It can enable people to learn, work and play better, and it can
offer new horizons, new ways of looking at things, and new experiences.
A whole
generation has already grown up enjoying real human experiences
of joy, challenge, delight, achievement, endeavour, exploration
and many more emotions, through computers and the communications
that they make possible. Businesses have seen technology make them
faster, more efficient, more competitive, leaner and fitter.
And
while they live and breathe software and technology at Microsoft
- they do so because of the very real human effect it can have on
people. Their ultimate motivation is the enjoyment of their customers:
There can be no greater goal for their staff than to see their products
and technologies in action, enabling and empowering all manner of
people, rich and poor, privileged or deprived, able or disabled,
at home, at work and at play.
Their
role, if nothing else, is to share that passion as widely as they
can.
