The Nationwide International Company
Nationwide
International Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nationwide Building
Society.
In
1989 the Isle of Man Financial Supervision Commission, the Island's
financial services regulator, issued six licences for building societies
to operate in the Isle of Man. In May of that year Nationwide opened
a branch operation in the Island's capital, Douglas. During the
first two years the branch operated in traditional markets offering
savings accounts to the local resident population.
In
1990, Nationwide established a subsidiary company, then called Nationwide
Overseas Limited, which developed a range of savings accounts designed
specifically to enable depositors to benefit from the Isle of Man’s
advantageous ‘offshore’ status.
Since then the business has developed on a truly international scale
and the Company now has customers resident in some 160 countries
throughout the world. Nationwide International's head office is
located in the Isle of Man, however it also has representative offices
based in Dubai and Gibraltar.
In
January 1997, the Company changed its name to Nationwide International,
which the directors felt more truly reflected the nature of the
business.
