Somerfield
Recent History
2001
In January, Somerfield launched its 'Regional Promise' roadshows
together with the National Farmers' Union to identify more local
producers and foods. The foot and mouth crisis put these on hold
throughout the year.
On
7 March, Somerfield's new flagship store in Kingswood, Bristol opened
- this represents the company's focus on quality fresh foods and
ready to eat meals in a modern shopping environment. Somerfield's
new top-level food range, So Good, was launched on 31 October to
rave reviews from the national press. The Times described So Good
as 'as good as it sounds'.
2002
On January 16, Somerfield opened its newest store in the centre
of Liverpool. On February 4, the creation of a new Somerfield Business
Unit was announced with a new management team to drive the recovery
programme and replicate the success of the Kwik Save Business Unit.
The move followed January's interim results for the group which
showed a return to the black for the business with profits of £5.6
million. Former retail operations director, Bill Williams, was appointed
managing director of the new unit which became fully operational
in mid-March.
Somerfield
